In a program undertaken to engage with South African university faculty and students to disseminate information on Sri Lanka, the High Commission of Sri Lanka welcomed a delegation of undergraduate students in Political Science and International Relations at the University of Pretoria accompanied by Professor Colonel Blake and the Team Mentor, Ms Shaina Moses on 26 September 2023 at the High Commission. The University of Pretoria is one of the prestigious Universities in Pretoria which is more than 100 years old.

As the visiting student delegation is taking part in a Model United Nations (MUN) conference at the university based on the United Nations Resolution on Model United Nations, the discussion commenced with the High Commissioner Prof. Gamini Gunawardane highlighting the main objective of UN Resolution (77/336 Model United Nations; 1st September 2023), namely "In engaging youth with multilateralism and international cooperation", and willingness of the High Commission in explaining to students Sri Lanka's policy and emphasis on multilateralism and international cooperation. The student delegation requested that special attention be paid to their main topic of interest "Fostering Security in the Indo-Pacific: challenges and opportunities."

The officials of the High Commission made a comprehensive slide-based presentation on Sri Lanka’s diplomacy and leadership in establishing a Zone of Peace in the Indian Ocean in 1971, under an item entitled “Declaration of the Indian Ocean as a Zone of Peace” at the UN General Assembly and the continuing involvement of Sri Lanka in Indo-Pacific issues in particular as the new Chair of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).
